Australia won the toss and elected to bat first, scored 301/4 at the stumps of 1st day. Ponting in his 35th Test century, hit 17 fours and 1 six in his inning of 158 runs off 244 balls, well supported by Micheal Hussey and Brad Hodge, scored 56 and 53 not out respectively.
