India won CB Series, beat Australia in the 2nd Final at Gabba

In a thrilling match, the 2nd final of Commonwealth Bank (CB) Series, India survived the final hurdle and fightback against Australia to win a thrilling ODI by nine runs and claim the series 2-0.

Irfan Pathan took two wickets in the final over with Australia needing 13 to win, after a half-century from James Hopes had inspired the hosts' fightback.

Chasing 259 after Sachin Tendulkar posted a classy 91, Australia struggled to recover from the loss of Adam Gilchrist, who scored two in his last ever international innings, and skipper Ricky Ponting for one.

Matthew Hayden (55) and the middle order provided some resistance to set up a nail biting finish but the India bowlers skittle the tail to clinch victory.

Twenty three years after India's last significant limited-overs title in Australia, Sachin Tendulkar helped script another memorable chapter with an innings of skill and determination. There was to be no repeat of his twin centuries against Australia in 1998, but his 91 set up a total which, backed by Praveen Kumar's subtle-swinging accuracy, proved nine runs too much for Australia.

India failed a higher total after Tendulkar's innings, Yuvraj Singh's 38 and 36 from Mahendra Singh Dhoni had set the platform. A lower order collapse prevented a more daunting total but in reply, Australia made a nervous start and lost Gilchrist in the first over.

Praveen Kumar once again put a brilliant perfomance took 4 wickets well supported by Harbhajan Singh.

India won 1st Final of CB Series - Tendulkar hit Century

Sachin Tendulkar's magnificent unbeaten 117 and shared a 123-run fourth-wicket stand with Rohit Sharma, led India to a thrilling six-wicket victory over Australia in the 1st final of the Commonwealth Bank Series at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Sunday.

Australia a victory target of 240 thanks to Matthew Hayden's 82, India secured the win in the 45th over when Mahendra Singh Dhoni found the boundary to hand the tourists the early initiative in the best-of-three final.

Tendulkar's masterly 117 - his 42nd ODI ton - came off just 120 deliveries and included 10 f0urs. The little master was well supported by youngster Rohit Sharma, who hit a brisk 66 off 87 balls put India on the path of success.

India reduced to 87/3 after 19 overs, the duo frustrated the Australian attack for more than 20 overs to lead the tourists from 87 for three to 210 before Sharma's innings came to an end just a few overs after he had registered his half-century from 70 balls.

The second final of CB Series between the two teams will be played at Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba on Tuesday, 4th March 2008.

Australia reached 100 in just 17 overs, but India fight back strongly by spinners to restrict Australia to 173/6 after 39 overs.

For India Praveen Kumar took 2 wickets for 40 runs, Harbhajan Singh also took 38-2 well supported by Chawla conceded just 33 runs in 10 overs. Patahn and Ishant Sharma took 1 wicket each.

For Australia only Hayden and Hussey contributed some useful run with 82 and 45 runs respectively.

Despite losing to Australia twice in a row in the league phase, India are confident they have the advantage going into the CB Series finals. Much of that confidence comes from their two victories in the last three games, both against Sri Lanka, and their fight against Australia despite losing to them.

It has been a bitter campaign between the sides, especially since the second Test in Sydney in early January, but the Indians can gain revenge for their 2-1 loss in the Test series by upsetting the home side in the best-of-three finals.

India have enough batting strength to derail the Australian bowlers like Tendulkar, back in form with 63 against Sri Lanka in the last league game. Virendar Sehwag is inconsistent but he has worth to play in the finals.

Gautam Gambhir has been the highest run getter in the CB Series and the only Indian batsman besides Dhoni, who has looked to take the attack to the opposition. With two centuries, the last of which came against Australia in Sydney, the venue of the first final on Sunday. Yuraj is also back in form with Rohit Sharma and Uthappa gives strength in the middle.

The bowling looks good with Ishant Sharma's pace and Irfan Pathan's swing tormenting the Australian top order. Adding to their woes will be Praveen Kumar whose deadly out swingers swung the pendulum India's way in the match against Sri Lanka.

Mitchell Johnson was the pick of the bowler, with 3 for 42, but he was well supported by Hopes, Bracken and Hogg.

Michael Clarke's sensible 79 was the backbone of Australia's total. India's seam bowlers were excellent again, with Ishant Sharma starting the slide and Pathan reverse-swinging the ball well to bag 4 for 4 1.

But India's batsmen failed to back their bowlers. Only opener Gautam Gambhir and captain Dhoni crossed the 30 runs mark, with 34 and 37 respectively. Australia stay at the top of the points table.

India beat Australia by five wickets in the fourth ODI of win their first match in the Commonealth Bank (CB) tri-series. This is also their first ODI win against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 22 years.

Ishant Sharma's carer-best figures of 4-37 and Rohit Sharma's handy 39 put the India on the way of success.

Australia's pacers have struck thrice in quick succession to inject life into a largely one-sided contest at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Having set India a small target of 160, Australia removed Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh in a short span.

At the crease are captain M.S. Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, who have added 15 slow runs in 40 minutes to help India draw closer to the smallish target on a pitch that has helped seam movement.

Tendulkar was batting assuredly all along even as wickets fell around him. He scored 44 in 51 balls, including three sublime fours in a Brett Lee over.

Earlier, India lost Virender Sehwag (11) and pinch-hitter Irfan Pathan (18) to sharp seam movement from Nathan Bracken and Mitchell Johnson.

Gautam Gambhir scored 20 steady runs before Lee got one to bounce awkwardly around off-stump to give an easy catch to Michael Clarke at point.

Yuvraj Singh played a loose shot to cover, adding only 2 to his woefully low string of scores on the tour. He had made 0, 5, 12 and 5 in the Tests and 2 in the game against Sri Lanka.

The lead-up has been less than ideal for India, who endured two wash-outs in Brisbane following their nine-wicket Twenty20 loss. Australia, on the other hand, enjoyed a 128-run thrashing of Sri Lanka in Sydney on Friday.

India vs Australia - CB Series Opener ended in a draw due to rain

The opening match of the triangular series between Australia and India was abandoned due to rain on Sunday at Brisbane.

The tourists won the toss and opted to bat first, with Gautam Gambhir contributing 39 and Mahendra Singh Dhoni 37 as the Indians were restricted to 194 from their 45 overs - the match already having been reduced by five overs following a 90-minute delay.

Lee was the pick of the Australian bowlers with five for 27 from nine overs - his seventh five-wicket haul in one-day internationals.

The India innings was disrupted by rain, meaning the hosts' victory target was revised at the interval to 192 from 43 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis method.

But the rain persisted when the Australia innings got under way and, although the target was further adjusted following delays, the downpour ultimately caused the match to be called off with the home team 51 for three after 7.2 overs in pursuit of 141 from 26.

As the match ended in a draw both teams got 2-2 points each.

India are next in action against Sri Lanka in Brisbane on Tuesday, while Australia face Sri Lanka in Sydney on Friday.

India's selectors picked a young and athletic side for the CB tri-series and the merits and demerits of that decision were on display in the opening game in Brisbane as India were reduced 101 for 5 at the half-way stage.

India give Manoj Tiwary his first ODI cap. Whilst the young Bengali will be delighted with his call-up, there is disappointment for Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Piyush Chawla, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel and the injured Yuvraj Singh, who have all been left out.

For Australia, Ricky Ponting plays, while Matthew Hayden is not at full fitness and Stuart Clark has not joined the side. James Hopes will open the innings with Ashley Noffke making his debut.

Lee won his battle against Tendulkar yet again, although, this time he was a bit lucky. Tendulkar nudged off the back foot towards square leg but he had moved too deep in his crease and trod on his stumps. It was the first time that he had been dismissed hit-wicket in his 408-match career.

The 4th and final test match between India and Australia has ended in a draw. Australia won the series by 2-1.

India, in their second inning made 269/7. Sehwag batted into the final session on his way to making 151 and the Indians retreated home with a 2-1 series defeat but having regained some pride after losing the first two Tests.

With Ricky Ponting off the field because of a back injury, Adam Gilchrist captained the Australians for his final day of Test cricket. Fittingly, Gilchrist - who set a world record for Test dismissals on Friday - took Sehwag's scalp. The 29-year-old tried to open the face of the bat to play the ball behind point but sent a slight edge through to Gilchrist, who had to be alert for the catch.

Sehwag departed to warm applause in a match which was played in a palpably better atmosphere than the first two, when relations between the two sides threatened to deteriorate completely.

Sehwag completed a 13th Test century from just 123 balls after taking a single off Mitchell Johnson in a knock that included 11 fours and two sixes.

This was the last test match for Australian wicket keeper and vice captain Adam Gilchrist, as he also made the record of highest number of dismissals in test cricket behind the wickets.

AUS vs IND 4th Test - Tendulkar Hits his 39th Test Century

Sachin Tendulkar has scored his 39th test hundred on the first day of 4th and final test match against Australia at Adelaide.

This is his 9th Test ton against Australia and the second in the series.

Tendulkar Completed his century in style, he was 92 and hit a huge six off Clarke to reach 98 and on the next ball cracked a four to complete his 39th test hundred.

He took only 133 balls to complete his century.

Virender Sehwag provided the early impetus and Sachin Tendulkar the afternoon entertainment.
Tendulkar walked in just before lunch, and it took him 18 balls to get off the mark. When he did, it was worth waiting for, a magnificent on-drive off Brett Lee. That seems to lift an invisible weight off his shoulders, and Mitchell Johnson was then taken for three fours through the off side in an over that saw India go past 100.

Tendulkar's intent against Hogg was unmistakable, with cuts, sweeps and a huge shot that soared over midwicket for six.

After 76 overs India were 282 for 5, Tendulkar on 113 and Dhoni on 2.

India has restricted Australians to 337/9 in the first inning on day 1 of Boxing Day test match of the four match test series.

Skipper Anil Kumble inspired a dramatic Indian fightback to almost bowl Australia out on the opening day of the first cricket Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday.

Australia started well, when openers Matthew Hayden and Phil Jaques propelled Australia to a 135-run opening stand. Hayden (124) shared in a century opening partnership with Jaques (66) and departed at the fifth wicket down to massive acclaim from the 68,465 Boxing Day crowd.

But Kumble claimed five wickets and paceman Zaheer Khan 3-93 as the world No.1 side slumped to 337 for nine by stumps to hand India the early momentum.
