The match was a dead rubber with Australia and India already having qualified for the Commonwealth Bank Series finals.
Australia were in pole position after dismissing Sri Lanka for 221 with only Mahela Jayawardene (50) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (62) offering substantial contributions. But after an opening stand of 107 between Gilchrist and James Hopes, they lost a glut of wickets and never recovered.
The retiring wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist notched a terrific 83 from 50 balls, was in his prime form.

Australia beats Sri Lanka by 24 runs, Duckworth-Lewis
Australia confirmed their place in the finals of the Commonwealth Bank Series finals after they recorded a 24-run Duckworth-Lewis system victory against Sri Lanka at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
They had only themselves to blame, though, after dawdling in their chase of 185. Sri Lanka's innings was 29.3 overs old when the showers came but they had only reached 4 for 77 and they needed to have 101 on the board to make Duckworth-Lewis work in their favour. They were so far off the mark they even conceded the bonus point to Australia. The slow pitch did not help matters, and Sri Lanka's go-to man Kumar Sangakkara struggled to find a way to score.
The Sri Lankans, who must now win their final two games of the competition to stand any chance of joining the Australians in the best-of-three finals series, had looked on course to claim a rare victory against the Australians when they restricted the hosts to 184 for seven.

Sri Lanka restricted world champions Australia to a modest total of 184/7 in thier 50 overs in 9th ODI of CB series at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Credit to Sri Lanka's bowlers who have done so well throughout, bowling so well as a unit and didn't let up in the field, although they couldn't quite connect with any of the direct hits. Mahroof was pick the bowler, took wickets for only 220 runs in 10 overs, well suported by Murlitharan also took 2 wickets.
Hussey and Clarke are the only batsmen to emerge with any real credit, both striking what could be crucial fifties in a lowish run chase. Hussey was unbeaten on 64 off 98 balls with 1 four and Clarke hit 50 off 69 balls with 4 fours.

CB Series 6th ODI - Australia beats Sri Lanka by 63 runs
Australia have beaten Sri Lanka by 63 runs to go atop the points table. They have picked up the bonus point as well.
You have to give it to Adam Gilchrist - he does have some sense of timing. In his last innings at the WACA, with Australia under a little bit of pressure half-way through the final edition of the CB Series, Adam Gilchrist and his little squash ball treated an adopted home crowd to a measured hundred that was exactly one half of his side's 236.

Adam Gilchrist scored a century in his last homeground ODI.
Adam Gilchrist, in his last innings at the WACA,Perth scripted a memorable hundred. Sri Lanka have bowled out Australia for 236 in 49.4 overs.
Malinga was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets. Sri Lanka have a good chance here to beat the Aussies and go atop the standings.
Adam Gilchrist scored exactly half of Australia's inning of 236. He hit 118 runs in 132 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes. Gilchrist got little support from his team-mates, however, as Sri Lanka struck twice at the start and in a cluster towards the end to bowl Australia out in 49.4 overs, led by Lasith Malinga.
The cheer for Gilchrist as he walked on to the field was palpable and if he was overcome by emotion he didn't show it.
In reply Sri Lanka was 71/3 in 11 overs, require another 166 runs with 7 wickets and 39.1 overs remaining.

In the 6th ODI of CB series between Sri Lanka and Australia, Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat at the WACA, Perth on Friday.
For Australia, James Hopes and Brad Hogg are back in the lineup in place of Stuart Clark and Brad Haddin.
Sri Lanka have fielded the same side that beat India on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka, after having beaten India by eight wickets in the rain-curtailed encouter at Canberra on Tuesday, are high on confidence. A win at Perth on Friday would see them top the standings, relegating Australia to the bottom. The hosts were beaten in the Test match at Perth by India just a couple of weeks ago and they would do all they can to avoid a repeat against another subcontinental team.
This is Adam Gilchrist's last on his homeground, WACA and Australia will hope to use this as a spur.

Aus vs SL - 3rd ODI of CB Series, Australia won by 128 runs
Australia have demolished Sri Lanka in the first full match of the Commonwealth Bank series at Sydney. A huge 128-run win gets them a bonus point as well.
For Australia, Michael Clarke and Adam Gilchrist set up an imposing target of 6 for 253. Nathan Bracken picks up his second five-wicket haul.
Kumar Sangakkara looked like carrying on from his last international innings in Australia - he made 192 in the Hobart Test in November - as he cracked 16 off a Brett Lee over.
